Thanks for the update and correction, Jason. I'd think with the next release of the Kindle, Amazon might want to get the PDF conversion off "experimental" and highlight this compatibility with other formats and vendors. It's on the Kindle page, but well below the fold and the bullet points of features.

I think Roy did himself a disservice by tying his original idea--his claim that the Kindle is not selling as well as some would have you believe--with his larger claim that the Kindle will *never* work.

I haven't seen a Kindle yet, though I believe if I did, I'd like the reading experience. My problem is less with the dedicated device, and more with what Tim O'Reilly points out in his comment on Roy's post:

"I also struggle with Amazon's DRM and sole-source approach, which seems to me to be a flawed copy of Apple's iPod strategy, missing not only Apple's brilliant design but also the positive externality that consumers could easily add their own music collection to the device by ripping mp3s."

That's something that Amazon might fix in the long run, though. Once they do that and once the price comes down, I'd take a more serious look at one.

I am not taking my usual early adopter stance on this one as much as I want to. This decision is SOLELY based on price. I'll wait and see what happens price-wise in the next 12-18 months. I am patient and I have plenty of time.

The free Internet service has a cash value of about USD$370. I suppose it works great in coverage areas. In Nevada such is tricky due to the small percent of the state's land mass that is covered. There really isn't coverage while travelling between Las Vegas and Reno.
